Tip #3: Use Port Forwarding
to Access iPIO

If you need to access your iPIO from the internet, you may need to configure your router to properly understand the requests to connect to the iPIO.

Your router has one 'public' or WAN IP Address. Your local network has multiple devices, each with its own 'local' IP address. The process the router uses to identify which request to its public IP address should go to which local IP machine is called Port Forwarding.

In the diagram above, port forwarding instructed the router to forward any requests for port 9090 to local IP address 192.168.1.4 . The iPIO at IP address 192.168.1.4 has been programmed to use port 9090 for as its web server. With this configuration, you could point your browser to the routers public IP address with the port 9090 as the suffix 'http://220.117.3.89:9090'. The router would route the request to the iPIO.

Tip #4: Advanced Pairing Options

When pairing two iPIO units together, there are some advanced options that might be helpful:
  • Security. By default, the iPIO does not use security to transmit commands between pairs of units. To set security, log into the Remote unit and set a Passphrase in the Network Setup page, and check the AES box. On the Local unit, go to the Remote Setup page and enter the Remote units Passphrase, and check the AES box.

  • Port Selection. The IPIO allows selection of any TCP-IP port to communicate between units. These two ports must match between pairs of units. Set the Remote unit's port on its Network Setup page, and the Local units port on the Remote Setup page for the desired remote. Default Port is 9100.

  • Output Mapping. By default, the inputs of the Local unit map 1:1 to the outputs of the Remote unit. This can be changed to allow one input to communicate with multiple remotes, multiple Local units to communicate with one Remote, or conserve remote outputs.
