What is UL Certification?

Underwriter Laboratories (UL) is one of the oldest safety certification companies around. They certify products, facilities, processes, or systems based on industry-wide standards. There are other Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs), but they all test to the UL Standard, which makes UL the gold standard for testing and certification.

UL certifies products to make the world safer for consumers and workers. In addition to product safety testing, UL sets the industry standards for companies to follow as they develop new products. UL continually checks products and equipment to ensure they meet compliance standards and are constructed properly for the highest level of safety. For instance, UL testing will review whether devices can handle the appropriate electrical current and whether wire sizes are correct. Equipment that should be UL certified includes IT equipment, appliances, cable and wire, signaling alarms, electronics, and electrical supplies. UL certification is also appropriate for equipment used in hazardous areas and fire suppression.

UL certification is a thorough process that can be lengthy and costly. Each product component will need to be individually tested to ensure its durability and safety and whether it meets the intended design purposes. This can mean testing products under specific conditions that involve cold, heat, length of running time, and UV resistance.
